Tolling of the Memorial Church bell
In Memoriam Nathan Marsh Pusey

To mark the passing of Nathan Marsh Pusey, A.B. 1928, twenty-fourth president of Harvard University, the bell of The Memorial Church tolled for two minutes at 12:15 on Nov. 14.

As president of Harvard from 1953 to 1971, Nathan Marsh Pusey was a strong advocate of The Memorial Church and its role in the University. Five years ago, dedicating a book of sermons in his honor, The Reverend Professor Peter J. Gomes, Plummer Professor of Christian Morals and Pusey Minister in The Memorial Church, extolled him as "Wise in Learning, Broad in Sympathy, Rich in Piety, Christian Scholar-Citizen: His faithful presence enhanced the witness of this Church."

The bell of The Memorial Church, dedicated as a memorial to the Harvard dead of World War I and inscribed "In Memory of Voices That Are Hushed," was donated by President Abbot Lawrence Lowell, under whose leadership The Memorial Church was built. The bell is traditionally tolled to mark the deaths of members of the University.
