Two weeks after the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union, 13-year-old Emmanuel Rashba and his family fled eastward from Kyiv, Ukraine. Many years later, Rashba’s work in physics helped pave the way for spintronics. Colleagues celebrated his 80th birthday last week.
