McCarthy was invited to join the event by Al Gore, who, together with the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), was awarded the 2007 prize. A renowned climate expert, McCarthy is one of approximately 12 scientists (and one of three U.S. scientists) to have held leadership roles in the IPCC over its 20-year history.
