Social history
Harvard's Social Museum, founded in 1903, was a repository of images documenting the ills of modern life and the methods used to ameliorate them. 'Classified Documents: The Social Museum of Harvard University, 1903-1931,' on exhibit at the Arthur M. Sackler Museum through June 10, showcases many of these images. Above, a gelatin silver print, photographer unknown, shows two 'inmates' of the New York City Home for Aged and Infirm, c. 1903.
