Slavery and capitalism
Walter Johnson, a historian whose groundbreaking study of slave markets in the American South shows slavery 'to have been an essential element of America's emerging system of capitalism,' has been appointed professor of history in Harvard University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), effective July 1.
