Anne Eisner, 'Beauty Salon,' watercolor on newsprint, 1956, private collection.
'Images of Congo'
In 1946, painter Anne Eisner moved from New York to the former Belgian Congo, where she spent nine years, much of it in contact with the Mbuti Pygmies. Eisner immersed herself in their world, painting the Pygmies, transcribing their legends, and keeping ethnographic notes. Above, Eisner's 'Beauty Salon' uses everyday materials to celebrate an ordinary moment in Congolese life. (Courtesy of Houghton Library)
