Fields day

With 13 of Harvard's 41 varsity teams kicking off their fall schedule this September, the University's eclectic collection of grassy, rectangular playing fields (natural or otherwise) have abruptly erupted with cheers, jeers, whistles, marching band renditions of Nirvana songs, and, of course, athletic feats. And with such satellite facilities as Jamaica Plain's wooded Franklin Park and the well-kept links of area country clubs playing host to the Crimson's cross country and golf teams, respectively, the home team buzz is not limited to Cambridge. Between the University's fall varsity schedule and its wide range of club sport offerings, over 500 weekend and weekday warriors provide fans of the Crimson with plenty of options (and excuses) to make some noise among all this competition.
