In brief

HUAM seeks sketchers

Beginning in September, the Harvard University Art Museums (HUAM) will present “Sketching After School” — a weekly drawing series for young people between the ages of 8 and 12. Artist and educator Deborah Putnoi, who has degrees from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and Tufts University, will lead the sketching activities.

The hour-long sketching sessions will meet in the Fogg Art Museum’s Calderwood Courtyard each Thursday (beginning Sept. 14) at 3:30 p.m. The opening session will run Sept. 14, 21, and 28, while the second session runs Oct. 5, 12, and 19. The cost is $25 ($20 for HUAM members) for three afternoons.

Participants will also have free access to all the galleries of HUAM. Paper and sketching pencils will be provided.

Registration and payment are required by Sept. 8, as space is limited (participants may register for one series only). Call Susannah Hutchison at (617) 496-8576 for further information or to register.

BSC fall course in reading, study strategies approaching

Beginning Oct. 11, Harvard’s Bureau of Study Counsel (BSC) will begin offering its fall Reading and Study Strategy seminar. Through readings, films, and classroom exercises, students learn to read more purposively, selectively, and with greater speed and comprehension. Hour-long sessions will be held Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (Oct. 11-Nov. 10) at 8 a.m. and Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday (Oct. 11-Nov. 9) at 4 p.m. The cost is $150.

To register, visit the BSC at 5 Linden St., or call (617) 495-2581 for more information.

Milton Fund accepting proposals

The bequest of William F. Milton makes research funds available to faculty members of Harvard University. Applicants must be members of the University with voting privileges in their respective faculties and must not have received Milton Fund support in the past five years. Preference will be given to new and original projects, especially independent work of young, recently appointed faculty members.

To download an application, visit http://www.hms.harvard.edu/spa/funding/internal/milton.htm, or contact sarah_luft@hms.harvard.edu for more information. The application deadline is Oct. 5.
