Ph.D. candidate named Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellow

The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation has selected Japa Pallikkathayil, a Ph.D. candidate in philosophy, as one of its 30 Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellows for 2006. A highly competitive national award, the fellowship provides $18,500 for 12 months of work on a dissertation in the humanities or social sciences that addresses questions of religious or ethical value. The title of Pallikkathayil's dissertation is "Your Money or Your Life: Coercion in Personal and Political Contexts."

HBS's Michael Beer collects pair of awards

Cahners-Rabb Professor of Business Administration Emeritus Michael Beer has recently been named the recipient of the Distinguished Scholar-Practitioner Award from the Academy of Management. One of the highest honors bestowed upon members of the Academy of Management, this award recognizes the "practitioner-scholar who uses practice-based learning to influence theory and research-based theory to influence practice."

An expert in organizational effectiveness, change, and human resource management, Beer has also received the Harry and Miriam Levinson Award for Exceptional Contributions to Consulting Organizational Psychology from the American Psychological Foundation. The award is named in honor of Harry Levinson, a prominent clinical psychologist.

Washington University honors Gates with degree

At its 145th commencement ceremony on May 19, Washington University in St. Louis awarded an honorary doctorate of human letters to W.E.B. Du Bois Professor of the Humanities Henry Louis Gates Jr. Gates, who chairs Harvard's Department of African and African American Studies, joined four other professionals and academics from across the country to be honored.
