Men's heavies pick up Rowe Cup, 2V's claim gold
The Harvard men's heavyweight crew captured the Rowe Cup at the EARC Sprints this past Sunday (May 21) at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester. The Crimson took gold, silver, and bronze in the second varsity, varsity, and first freshman races, respectively, after qualifying for the finals in all five races. Harvard has now won the award 27 times, the most of any school.
The varsity race pitted the Crimson vs. Princeton and Brown - the only teams to defeat Harvard all season. And though the Cambridge rowers got revenge against the Bears (5:46.24), they failed to get by the Tigers, who won in a time of 5:41.59 to better the Crimson by three seconds.
Harvard's second varsity produced a come-from-behind win in the final 100 meters against a surging Yale team to capture the gold. The victory marked the 2V's fourth win in five years to keep the squad undefeated on the season. In the first freshman race, Harvard edged Wisconsin by one second to grab the third-place spot behind Northeastern and first-place Penn.
Rowing resumes competition June 1-3 when the men's and women's lights join the men's heavyweights at the IRA champs in Camden, N.J.
