McCormick receives award

Marie McCormick, Sumner and Esther Feldberg Professor of Maternal and Child Health, received the Douglas K. Richardson Award for Perinatal and Pediatric Healthcare Research at the 2006 annual meeting of the Society for Pediatric Research in San Francisco on Sunday (April 30). McCormick has devoted her career to researching and raising awareness about children's health issues. She is a pioneer in research related to low-birth-weight infants and their health outcomes and was co-principal investigator of the National Healthy Start Program.

The Douglas K. Richardson Award is made annually by the society and provides an honorarium and plaque.

Lamont named chair, lecturer

Professor of Sociology and of African and African American Studies Michele Lamont has been named chair of the Council for European Studies (CES), the learned society of American social scientists and historians working on Europe. Her term will run until 2009. Additionally, the American Sociological Association (ASA) selected Lamont as its Alpha Kappa Delta Distinguished Lecturer for 2006.

Willie accepts merit award

Charles V. Willie, the Charles W. Eliot Professor of Education Emeritus of the Graduate School of Education, recently received the Merit Award from the Eastern Sociological Society (ESS) at its 76th annual meeting. One of the society's highest honors, the award is given annually to one whose career has made "outstanding contributions to the discipline, profession, and organization." A past president of the society, Willie was also invited to deliver the Sorokin Lecture, which is named in honor of the first chairman of the Department of Sociology at Harvard.
