William James Foundation awards student-led plan
The William James Foundation recently named the Harvard student-led Fair Market Financial (FMF) business plan as one of its outstanding merit award winners in the foundation's third annual Socially Responsible Business Plan Competition. The plan's team members were Jin "PJ" Kim M.B.A./M.P.A. '06, Kevin Palma M.B.A. '06, and Andrew Gaies J.D. '06.
The FMF plan would provide employer-sponsored tax preparation for low-wage workers at their work site, especially for those who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, the government's most successful antipoverty program.
Dvorak receives prestigious cancer research prize
Harold F. Dvorak, the Mallinkrodt Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School, has received the inaugural Albert Szent-Gyorgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research from the National Foundation for Cancer Research. Established in honor of Nobel laureate Szent-Gyorgyi, co-founder of the foundation, the prize recognizes outstanding scientific achievement in the field of cancer research. In 1983, Dvorak and his colleagues were the first to demonstrate that tumor cells secreted vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), known at the time as vascular permeability factor, or VPF.
