Summers leads Harvard delegation to India

Harvard University President Lawrence H. Summers led a faculty delegation to India this week to celebrate the University's ties to the world's largest democracy and to emphasize Harvard's important research initiatives in India. Summers met with Vasundhara Raje, chief minister of Rajasthan, one of India's largest states, and discussed higher education and how to increase the number of girls who complete their educations. He also talked in New Delhi to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and the Confederation of Indian Industries, and gave the keynote address at the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry's Higher Education Summit. On Friday (March 24), Summers will travel to Mumbai, where he will attend ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the new Harvard Business School Research Center and the Harvard University South Asia Initiative and give an address at the Reserve Bank of India. On Saturday, Summers will be back in New Delhi to kick off the Harvard School of Public Health's China-India Comparative Project and make opening remarks at the first-ever University-wide Harvard Alumni Association event to be held in India. Alumni from 24 countries are scheduled to attend. Many of Summers' remarks will be posted on his Web site at http://www.president.harvard.edu.
