A sacred Maya mural (detail above) at San Bartolo is the earliest known Maya painting. Depicting the birth of the cosmos and the divine right of a king, it dates from around 100 B.C. and is the latest of the discoveries at an ancient Maya site stumbled upon by Peabody Museum researcher Bill Saturno while on a field expedition in 2001.
