Fromm Foundation announces 2005 commissions

Harvard foundation works to bring music to public by supporting composers

The board of directors of the Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard has announced the names of 14 composers selected to receive 2005 Fromm commissions.

The composers who received commissions are Jason Bahr (Mississippi State, Miss.), Claude Baker (Bloomington, Ind.), Kui Dong (Union City, Calif.), Keith Fitch (New York, N.Y.), Daniel S. Godfrey (Syracuse, N.Y.), Adam Greene (San Diego), Stephen Jaffe (Durham, N.C.), Hi Kyung Kim (Santa Cruz, Calif.), Tania Leon (Nyack, N.Y.), Alfred Lerda (South Hadley, Mass.), James Mobberley (Liberty, Mo.), Morris Rosenzweig (Salt Lake City), Kurt Stallman (Houston), and Orianna Webb (Akron, Ohio).

These commissions represent one of the principal ways that the Fromm Music Foundation seeks to strengthen composition and to bring contemporary concert music closer to the public. In addition to the commissioning fee of $10,000, a subsidy is available for the ensemble performing the premiere of the commissioned work. Among a number of other projects, the Fromm Music Foundation sponsors the annual Fromm Contemporary Music Series at Harvard.

Applications for commissions are reviewed on an annual basis. The annual deadline for proposals is June 1. For guidelines, visit http://www.fas.harvard.edu/musicdpt/fromm.html.

Founded by the late Paul Fromm, the Fromm Music Foundation is now in its 50th year, and has been located at the University for the past 30. Since the 1950s, the foundation has commissioned more than 300 new compositions and their performances, and has sponsored hundreds of new music concerts and concert series.
