Sports in brief

Team HMS reaches beach among top 30 finishers

A dozen Harvard Medical School students placed 23rd overall out of 285 running clubs in the seventh annual Reach the Beach Relay this past weekend (Sept. 16-17) in New Hampshire. The 24-hour, 200-mile relay kicked off in Crawford Notch in the heart of the White Mountains and ended on the shore at Hampton Beach State Park. Team HMS, who used the event to raise money for the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, finished the course in 26:11:48, less than six minutes behind the first-place Bucknell Alumni Distance Team.

Bode boosts golf to 3rd-place showing

The Harvard women's golf team opened its season with a third-place overall finish (out of 17 teams) in the Dartmouth Women's Invitational at the Hanover Country Club on Sept. 17-18. Individually, freshmen Ali Bode shot just 71 on the second day of competition - a tournament low - to capture second place overall. All told, Bode was four over par for the weekend.

Ivy rival Columbia finished first with a total score of 610, besting Siena College by 15 swings, and Harvard by 19.
