Sports in brief
Top-ranked sailing off to strong start
Breezy and dry conditions accompanied a string of pretty performances for the Harvard sailing team over the past two weeks, starting with the team's first-place showing (out of 24 schools) at Yale's Harry Anderson Cup on Sept. 3-4 - Harvard's first race of the season - to the Crimson's third-place showing in a fleet of 10 boats the following weekend at the Man-Labs Regatta on the Charles. Most recently, the Crimson took second out of two dozen colleges at the Dartmouth-hosted Captain Hurst Bowl this past Monday (Sept. 12). Bowl winner Yale finished with 72 points - 16 fewer than the Crimson.
Football kicks off campaign against Crusaders
The reigning Ivy League Champion Harvard football team will put it s 11-game active winning streak - the longest in Division I-AA football - on the line this Saturday (Sept. 17) against cross-state rival Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. The game will be broadcast live on AM 1510 The Zone and on Harvard's student-run station WHRB-FM 95.3, or check http://www.gocrimson.com for updates. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Volleyballer named player of the week
Middle hitter Suzie Trimble '08 was named Ivy League player of the week after her superb play during last weekend's three-game home stand. In three matches, the 6-foot-1-inch sophomore recorded 43 kills in 89 swings to help Harvard (2-1; 0-0 Ivy) capture the New England Challenge championship. She leads the Crimson in hitting percentage (4.16), kills (3.31), and blocks per game (0.92).
