HAA announces annual Aloian Scholars

Joshua Reyes '05 of Leverett House and Navin Kumar '06 of Kirkland House have been named this year's David Aloian Memorial Scholars. The two will be honored at the Harvard Alumni Association's (HAA) fall dinner in October.

Established in 1988 to honor the late David Aloian '49, a former HAA executive director and master of Quincy House, the scholarships recognize two rising seniors who have made unique contributions to their Houses and to undergraduate life, thus making Harvard "an exciting place in which to live and study."

Reyes, of Holbrook, Mass., has taken on a large amount of responsibility for the day-to-day running of the House in his role as assistant superintendent. He has served on the House's committee for two years and recently organized the celebration for two newly assigned freshmen as co-chair of the House committee. This year Reyes prepared new blueprints for all of Leverett's rooms in order to help students negotiate the lottery process on the House's Web page. "He has continued to make Leverett a more enjoyable place to live, actively planning social events, formals, and smaller-scale activities within the House to ease the stresses of everyday life at Harvard," according to HAA.

Kumar, of Mequon, Wis., has marked his leadership in Kirkland House through his reputation as a community builder. Currently, he is one of the three students who helped to resurrect the College Health Initiative program in his House and has been responsible for innovative study breaks during Health Awareness Week. Combining his love for his own culture with a desire to spread awareness, he organized a House-wide Bhangra study break. "Kumar has excelled in community building by giving back to the House community in nontraditional ways and extending himself to help others and make the House atmosphere more enjoyable for everyone," said HAA.
