Baseball swings sweep for Ivy crown

Last weekend's stormy weather turned up roses for Harvard baseball, as the host Crimson swept two games from Cornell in Monday's (May 9) rescheduled Ivy League Championship, handing the home team its first league title in three years. Harvard's pitching crew - well rested after Saturday's and Sunday's rainouts - limited Cornell to two runs over a pair of contests to dismiss the Big Red, 2-0 and 4-2.

Recent Ivy honorable mention Frank Herrmann '06 pitched a nine-inning shutout in game one, allowing just eight hits and fanning six Cornell batters, while Shawn Haviland '08 (also an honorable mention) and reliever Steffan Wilson '08 combined to hold Cornell to four hits and two runs in the second contest. Wilson, recently named Ancient Eight's Rookie of the Year, earned his sixth save of the season - a new school record.
All told, nine Harvard players received league honors. Joining Herrmann, Haviland, and Wilson were catcher Schuyler Mann '05 and infielder Zak Farkes '06 as first team selections; juniors Morgan Brown and Lance Salsgiver, at shortstop and outfield, respectively, as second team selections; and pitcher Mike Morgalis '05 and first baseman Josh Klimkiewicz '06, who nabbed honorable mentions.
In clinching the Ivy, the Crimson (26-15; 17-5 Ivy) move on to NCAA championship play, to be held at 16 different regional sites from June 3-6. The first-round match-ups will be announced May 30.
