Dean Shinagel receives Nolte Award

Dean of Continuing Education and University Extension Michael Shinagel received the Julius M. Nolte Award for Extraordinary Leadership at the annual conference of the University Continuing Education Association (UCEA) April 16 in San Antonio. Established in 1965, the Nolte Award is the most prestigious of all UCEA awards and is given to an individual in recognition of "unusual and extraordinary contributions to the cause of continuing education on the regional, national, and international level."

In presenting the award, the UCEA commented that Shinagel is one of continuing education's most visionary leaders. Under his guidance for nearly 30 years, the Extension School has become "an exemplar of how to create high-quality programs for adult learners, develop programs that address community needs, and involve continuing education in advancing the goals of the larger university," according to the association. The UCEA also cited the high national standards set by Harvard's Division of Continuing Education: "Its programs have provided models that many institutions have sought to emulate. In leading one of the pre-eminent continuing education providers, Shinagel has been a powerful spokesperson for the field at large."
