Thirty-five cultural groups score grants
The Students and Faculty Advisory Committee of the Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations recently approved grants totaling more than $25,000 for Harvard College student groups to support programs that focus on culture, ethnicity, and race. These grants will support speakers, panel discussions, workshops, performances, publications, banquets, and other activities proposed by student organizations.
"We were delighted to see such a wide range of student cultural interests and activities in the grant applications," said David Haig, associate professor of biology and member of the foundation's Faculty Advisory Committee. "The Student Advisory Committee did a fine job in selecting a broadly diverse group of intellectual and social activities to conduct at the College," Haig continued.
Receiving grants this semester were Latinas Unidas, Native Americans at Harvard College, the Japan Society, RAZA (the Mexican-American student organization), Harvard Society of Black Scientists and Engineers, the South Asian Association, the Italian Cultural Society, and the Persian Society, among others. The Harvard Foundation will again distribute grants for the spring semester in February 2003.
