In her new role, Greene will oversee the day-to day activities of the center, while also directing the burgeoning Human Rights Policy Fellows Program. She will manage a strategic planning process and fundraising around the Carr Center's four primary research program areas (American Exceptionalism, The Use of Force and Human Rights, National and International Responses to Genocide and Mass Atrocity, and NGO Accountability and Effectiveness).

"Michelle brings an extraordinary work ethic, vast management experience, and a deep commitment to human rights," said Michael Ignatieff, director of the Carr Center. "With her leadership, the center will make new, exciting, and important contributions to the fields of policy and human rights in the years ahead."

"It is difficult to imagine a more committed or talented addition to the Carr Center team," noted the center's outgoing executive director and founder Samantha Power.

Power, who plans to continue her involvement with the center, was recently named lecturer in public policy at the Kennedy School. She will be on leave in the summer and fall, conducting research with the Open Society Institute in New York. In the spring semester of 2003, Power will teach a course on human rights and U.S. foreign policy at the Kennedy School. Power recently published "'A Problem From Hell': America and the Age of Genocide" (Basic Books, 2002), the culmination of several years of research in the center's program on National and International Responses to Genocide and Mass Atrocity.
