HILR to sponsor concert:

Music celebrates 25th anniversary

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Harvard Institute for Learning in Retirement (HILR) - a membership organization offering courses in a variety of liberal arts subjects to former professionals and academics - is presenting a concert on May 18 in Sanders Theatre featuring internationally renowned violinist Joseph Lin. A 2000 Harvard graduate, Lin will be joined by pianist Benjamin Loeb '89, and cellist Sarah Carter, currently a sophomore at Harvard. The concert, which is open to the public, will benefit the Phillips Brooks House Association, a Harvard student-run public service organization with a dual mission of social service and social action.

The program will include the Partita in E major for solo violin, BWV 1006 by Bach; the Sonata for violin and piano in G major, op. 78 by Brahms; and Ravel's Trio for piano, violin, and cello.

Lin was awarded first prize at the Concert Artists Guild Competition in 1996, and was named Presidential Scholar in the Arts the same year. In 1999, when he received the Pro Musicis International Award, he was the youngest musician to be chosen for the award since its inception. Most recently, Lin won first prize at the inaugural 2001 Michael Hill World Violin Competition in New Zealand, and a top prize at the 2000 Hannover International Violin Competition.

Loeb is an accomplished conductor, accompanist, and soloist. His widely varied projects range from concerts of Beethoven and Bruckner Symphonies to recordings with Yo-Yo Ma of Italian 16th century madrigalists to tours with popular rock musicians to world premieres of cutting-edge avant-garde contemporary music. He is in his first year as assistant conductor for the Haddonfield Symphony in New Jersey.

Carter began her cello instruction at age 7. She has soloed with the Cleveland Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, Seattle Youth Symphony, Bellevue Philharmonic, Skagit Valley Symphony, and Corpus Christi Symphony. She was the grand prizewinner at the 1999 Corpus Christi International Young Artists Competition, as well as the 1998 American String Teachers Association's National Solo Competition. Carter will attend the Marlboro School of Music this summer.
