Telephone exchange 998 implemented at Harvard

Each month Harvard adds up to 100 new phone numbers to its existing records. As a result of this ongoing expansion, the University Information Systems (UIS) Telecommunications group has acquired a new exchange in the 617 area code. The new exchange, 998, was implemented for use in the telephone-dialing plan across the University.

The new numbers, integrated into the existing numbering plan, are accessed utilizing the five-digit dialing currently employed. For example, within the Harvard telephone system a new 998 number will be reached by dialing 8-xxxx (xxxx equals the last four digits of the number). To access University numbers from outside the Harvard network callers will dial the 10-digit phone number, e.g., 617-998-xxxx.

The new numbers will be assigned as telecom requests are processed.

The list of exchanges in the 617 area code used by Harvard include (43)2, (38)4, (49)5, (49)6, and the new (99)8.
