Harvard fencing sends three to NCAA Championships

Junior foiler Ben Schmidt has been selected to compete at the NCAA Fencing Championships slated for March 21-24 at Drew University in Madison, N.J. Schmidt, the Harvard men's team co-captain, was chosen as an at-large candidate on the strength of his upset win over current U.S. foil champion Jon Tiomkin of St. John's at the NCAA regionals on Sunday, March 10.

Joining Schmidt in NCAA competition are seniors Tamara Knustsen and Ellen Schulz of the women's team. Knutsen, preparing for her second NCAA appearance, took sixth in the epee at regionals, while Schulz, a team co-captain, was eighth in foil.

Hoffmann receives EUSA award

The Executive Committee of the European Union Studies Association (EUSA) unanimously selected Stanley Hoffmann, the Paul and Catherine Buttenwieser University Professor, for the EUSA's 2003 award for Lifetime Contribution to European Union Studies.

Shelemay named American Folklife Center chair

Kay Kaufman Shelemay, the G. Gordon Watts Professor of Music, has been elected to a two-year term as chair of the board of trustees of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. The American Folklife Center documents and preserves the largest collection of materials relating to the traditional cultural heritage of the United States.
