Preston Cohen is appointed professor of architecture

Dean Peter G. Rowe of the Graduate School of Design (GSD) has announced the promotion of Preston Scott Cohen to professor of architecture with tenure. The promotion of Cohen, who has been teaching at the GSD since 1989 and is the coordinator of the introductory design studio, became effective Jan. 1.

"Cohen has shaped a distinctive research project from the convergence of architectural typology, descriptive geometry, contemporary spatial production, and digital media," Dean Rowe said. "Critical assessments of his work suggest that he has uncovered a new understanding of architecture's historical relationship with geometry. He combines this research with a remarkable ability to develop and transmit specific methodologies."

Cohen's recently published book, "Contested Symmetries and Other Predicaments of Architecture" (Princeton Architectural Press, 2001), demonstrates the originality of his project in a series of essays and designs spanning the last 10 years. He has received numerous awards and honors, and his projects have been exhibited and published widely in major international venues. Notable recent exhibitions include "The Un-Private House" at the Museum of Modern Art in 1999, and "Folds, Blobs and Boxes" at the Carnegie Museum of Art in 2001.

Cohen has also taught at Princeton University, Ohio State University, and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). He received his B.Arch from RISD and his M.Arch from the GSD.
