The astronomer
A portrait of astronomer Cecilia Payne Gaposchkin was unveiled in the Faculty Room in University Hall on Feb. 12. Gaposchkin was the first person to receive a Ph.D. in astronomy from Harvard (which she earned in two years), the first woman to receive tenure at Harvard, the first woman to be appointed to a professorship from within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), and the first woman to chair a department of the FAS.
