Public service tour
President Lawrence H. Summers became acquainted with some of Harvard's many community service activities last month. At Phillips Brooks House, ground zero of many public service programs run by students, he met with Judith H. Kidd, Harvard College assistant dean of public service. Then he headed to Boston's Mission Hill neighborhood to visit the Mission Hill Summer Program, one of 11 summer camps run in Boston and Cambridge by the Phillips Brooks House Association. The seven-week Mission Hill Summer Program serves 6- to 13-year-olds (like Bobbi Jones, 6, in photo) from Roxbury's Mission Main and Alice Taylor Housing Developments with academic programs and outdoor activities. Junior counselor Tushawn White, 16, looks on; like many campers, he has returned year after year. The Harvard students who serve as the camp's counselors and leaders live in the Roxbury community for the summer.
