Beanpot: Men bow to B.C.:

No. 2 ranked Eagles overwhelm Crimson

In their second encounter this season, the Harvard men's hockey team (10-10-1, 9-5-1 ECAC) was unable to avenge an early-season overtime loss against the Boston College Eagles (21-6-1, 13-3-1 Hockey East) - a game the Crimson let slip away - falling 4-1 this past Monday night in the first round of the 49th annual Beanpot Tournament at the FleetCenter.

B.C., ranked second in the nation, controlled play early, striking twice in the first period. Forward Brian Gionta netted the game's first goal - his team-leading 24th on the season - on a high wrister from inside the right circle. Freshman Chuck Kobasew tucked in a power play from just outside the crease to make it 2-0.

B.C. scored the lone goal of the second period when Marty Hughes struck during a man-up situation just 47 seconds after the teams returned to the ice, and a Tony Voce goal at 6:16 of the third extended the Eagle margin to 4-0.

Harvard averted the shutout when freshman forward Kenny Turano scored his fifth goal of the season with 9:38 gone in the final frame. Turano picked up a loose puck, skated in, and flipped the puck over goalie Scott Clemmensen's right pad on the short side.

Senior goaltender Oliver Jonas had 26 saves against the Eagles.

Harvard heads into Friday's ECAC game at Dartmouth tied for second place with St. Lawrence. The Crimson seek Beanpot consolation on Monday, Feb. 12, against the Northeastern Huskies at the FleetCenter.
