The Earthwatch Institute will hold its annual conference on Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Harvard Science Center. The program, which is open to the public, begins with registration at 9 a.m., at the Science Center.This 20th century meeting will highlight the role of volunteers in research and conservation, in recognition of the United Nations naming 2001 "The Year of the Volunteer." The conference will feature talks and poster presentations by 50 scientists and scholars from around the world.
William Sill, curator of paleontology at the Museum of Natural Sciences in San Juan, Argentina, and professor at the Universidad Nacional de San Juan, will deliver the keynote address. With the help of Earthwatch volunteers, Sill has directed excavations of Triassic deposits of the earliest dinosaurs.

Dissertation fellowships offered for World Religion
The Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard Divinity School is offering dissertation fellowships and a fellowship-in-residence program for the 2001-02 academic year.
Doctoral candidates in any University program whose dissertation research involves substantive study of religious phenomena may apply for the fellowship. The award includes a one-year stipend of $10,000 and the option of residence at the Center. The fellowship-in-residence program allows any Harvard doctoral student whose research focuses on the historical and comparative study of religion the opportunity to reside at the Center. The deadline for applying is Jan. 16, 2001.
