HARVARD GAZETTE ARCHIVES Scott M. Black Professorship Established at Kennedy School
The Kennedy School of Government has established a new chair in government, the Scott M. Black Professorship of Government. The chair, made possible by a gift from Scott M. Black MBA ’71, a member of the advisory board of the Kennedy School’s Malcom H. Wiener Center for Social Policy, will be broadly defined to allow for the recruitment of a world-class scholar interested in the areas of democracy, responsible government, national security, foreign policy, politics, and social policy. The Black Professorship will allow the scholar holding the chair to pursue teaching, research, and outreach in all areas of government. The broad definition of the chair will allow for the widest possible search for its recipient, including a search of international scholars. Kennedy School Dean Joseph S. Nye Jr. commented at the January 21 announcement of the professorship, "As a long-term friend of the Kennedy School, Scott Black understands the impact Harvard strives to make outside of its walls, helping to solve global policy challenges and putting its teaching and research into actual practice. The Black Professorship is an important addition to this goal and will allow innovative teaching, research, and outreach, consistent with Black’s wide-ranging interests in government and public policy."
