Harvard-Yenching Institute Hosts Visiting Scholars, Fellows


The Harvard-Yenching Institute has named its Visiting Scholars for the academic year 1999-00. The following Visiting Scholars were selected by a committee of Harvard faculty from a pool of candidates nominated by major universities in Asia chaired by Professor of English Robert Kiely. They will conduct independent research in the humanities and social sciences at Harvard.

The following Visiting Fellows are Ph.D. candidates from major universities in Asia. They will spend the year conducting research necessary for the completion of their dissertations: Bai Bin, Sichuan Union University, archaeology, a study of Taoist Dynasties; Dong Xiufang, Sichuan Union University, Chinese Department.; Lim Jong Tae, Seoul National University, history of science; Moon Ji Young, Sogang University, reconstitution of liberalism under Confucian tradition in South Korea; Ngo Thi Kim Dung, Institute for Social Sciences and Humanities, sociology of development; Nguyen Thanh, Hue University, Department of Literature; Ren Yixiong, Peking, Thai Studies; Wang Taoguang (beginning spring 2000) Peking University, law; Yan Jia, Sichuan Union University, Chinese Department; Zhao Baisheng, Peking University, English; Zhu Haiyan, CASS, Chinese classical fiction

Under an exchange program for Harvard undergraduates, recent graduates, and graduate students to spend one academic year at universities in Asia, the following students were selected to spend a year at Peking University: Frances C. Chang, Reginald Harris, Youngmin Kim (fall semester), and Jennifer Lee; at Fudan University: Loretta Kim and Valerie Jaffee; at Nanjing University: Andrew Green; and at Ewha University: Aziel Rivers, Tae Kwak, and Flora Kim.

In addition to those listed above, the Institute supports 43 Ph.D. candidates at Harvard and other universities such as Columbia, the University of California at Los Angles, the University of California at Berkeley, the London School of Economics, and the University of Cambridge.

The Harvard-Yenching Institute was founded in 1928 with funding provided by the estate of Charles M. Hall. It is a non-profit foundation dedicated to the advancement of higher education in the humanities and social sciences in East and Southeast Asia.
