WHRB To Launch Live Web Broadcasting
Harvard Radio Broadcasting Company Inc. will soon make its global debut. On Thursday, Nov. 18, WHRB introduces a 24-hour, live Website at http://www.whrb.org. In delivering its programming worldwide, WHRB offers both a standard-quality (20 kbps) feed and a high-quality (96 kbps) feed geared to a growing number of broadband Internet users. Streaming services are from Web Audio & Radio Portal Inc. (http://www.WarpRadio.com). Directions for obtaining the software required for reception can be found at the new Website. For half a century, WHRB (95.3 FM) has served Boston and its environs with a wide range of music broadcasts. Harvard Radio's daily broadcast of classical music, jazz, and underground rock explores a great repertory of music left largely untouched by other commercial stations. WHRB's weekend lineup features blues and urban contemporary programs, as well as Boston's beloved Hillbilly at Harvard, WHRB News, and Harvard Sports. WHRB is perhaps best known for inventing the musical "Orgy." Presented twice a year, in January and May, Orgies are marathon-style musical programs devoted to a single composer, performer, genre, or subject. The New York Times called them "idealistic and interesting," adding, "the WHRB Orgies represent a triumph of musical research, imagination, and passion."WHRB's Orgy season this January will feature the entire musical output of Johann Sebastian Bach in a broadcast uninterrupted for 10 straight days. The Bach Orgy, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the composer's death, starts Sunday, Jan. 9, at 7 p.m.
