Dunn Appoints First Radcliffe Institute Dean's Council

To assist in the strategic planning and development of the newly established Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Acting Dean Mary Maples Dunn has assembled leaders from a wide range of professional backgrounds to serve on the first Radcliffe Dean’s Council. Appointees include former Dartmouth College president James Freedman, Sonesta Hotels CEO Stephanie Sonnabend, and Carnegie Foundation president emeritus David Hamburg.

"I am a firm believer in taking advice from the best and the brightest," says Dunn. "The people who have agreed to serve on this council are highly accomplished in their respective fields and they bring a wide array of experiences and backgrounds to the table. Radcliffe is certainly in good hands."

At the first meeting of the Dean’s Council, to take place later this month in Cambridge, Dunn will lead planning discussions on how to frame and communicate the Radcliffe Institute’s mission and programs to various audiences.

A prominent member of the council will be Nancy-Beth Gordon Sheerr, former chair of the Radcliffe College Board of Trustees and a principal architect of the Harvard-Radcliffe merger agreement. Sheerr is one of over a dozen Radcliffe alumnae who will serve on the council.

Other members include Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Lotte Bailyn; vice president of the Mellon Foundation Mary Patterson McPherson; president of PG Calc Incorporated Gary Pforzheimer; attorney Renee Landers; and John H. D’Arms, president of the American Council of Learned Societies.

In addition to Sheerr, other former Radcliffe Trustees who will serve on the Dean’s Council include A’Lelia Bundles, Jennifer Diener, Ilene Lang, Suzanne Murray, Jane Aresty Silverman, Stephanie Sonnabend, Marianne Williams Tobias, Harriet Backus Todd, and Susan Wallach.

The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study is a scholarly community where individuals pursue advanced work across a wide range of academic disciplines, professions, and creative arts. Within this broad purpose, the Radcliffe Institute sustains a continuing commitment to the study of women, gender, and society.
