The final round of the annual Law School Ames Moot Court Competition will take place on Thursday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m., in the Ames Courtroom, Austin Hall, 1515 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge. Two teams of third-year law students will argue the case of Kim Tan v. Susan Applegate, District Director, United States Immigration and Naturalization Service. The Honorable Jon O. Newman, U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit, will serve as chief justice. Joining him as associate justices will be the Honorable William A. Fletcher, U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, and the Honorable Margaret H. Marshall, chief justice, Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. The A. Leon Higginbotham Memorial Team, representing the petitioner, will consist of Debi Cornwall, Andrew J. Ehrlich (oralist), Kathleen R. Hartnett, Rachel M. Jones, Michael E. Liftik, and William M. McSwain (oralist). The Jefferson Memorial team, representing the respondent, will consist of Danny David, Rebecca J.K. Gelfond (oralist), Preethi Krishnamurthy, Brendan Stephen Maher, Peter K. Stris (oralist), and Elizabeth Rogers. The tradition of "moots," or mock trials, dates back to the early years of the School, which was founded in 1817. The record, which was written by Ames Fellow Catherine Claypoole, presents questions about the constitutionality of the Immigration and Naturalization Service's long-term detention of aliens ordered deported from the United States.
