Students Become Finalists in International Computer Programming Competition
A team of Harvard computer students has again reached the international finals in the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) International Collegiate Programming Contest, placing second to an M.I.T. team at the Northeast Regional competition. The students, Joseph Turian 00, Richard Chiburis 02, Michael Bodell 00, and alternate Brendan Connell 02, will compete in the international competition in Orlando, Fla., March 15 to 19, 2000. Harvards team is among 58 finalists out of an original field of 2,300 teams from around the world. The annual contest is organized by ACM and sponsored by IBM. Teams are presented with a series of problems that test their software writing skills. The contest stresses teamwork and strategy as well as technical prowess and creativity. Harvard has fared well in the final round in recent years, placing eighth in last years contest, which took place in the Netherlands.ACM, an educational and scientific computing society, was established in 1947. The contest was first held in 1970.
