Steedly Wins MacArthur Funds to Study Globe Peace, Security Anthropology Professor Mary Steedly has been awarded funding of $74,353 from the MacArthur Foundation for her research project "Citadel Culture: Educating Citizen-Soldiers for a New World Order."The MacArthur Foundations Program on Global Security and Sustainability supports projects that take a fresh look at security issues in light of international events. The grants are intended to foster the integrated analysis of global trends in economics, the environment, technology, culture and society as these trends affect peace and cooperation between nations and peoples. Cancer Researcher Folkman Wins Gold Medal Judah Folkman, Julia Dyckman Andrus Professor of Pediatric Surgery and professor of anatomy and cellular biology at the Medical School, has received the 1999 Gold Medal for Cancer Research from the Italian Association for Cancer Research. The medal was presented by Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi during a Nov. 7 ceremony at the presidential palace in Rome. Folkman won the award for his work in the fight against cancer and for encouraging young Italian researchers to investigate how the growth of cancerous tumors is linked to the growth of blood vessels. Folkman has shown that tumors can be fought by cutting off their blood supply. Endostatin, a drug that inhibits the growth of blood vessels that feed tumors, was developed in Folkmans lab and has entered human trials. Guinier to Receive Women of Achievement Award Law Professor Lani Guinier was selected to receive a 1999 Women of Achievement award from the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston. The 19th annual Evening of Achievement will honor six women for their outstanding professional achievements and community involvement in a ceremony to benefit Big Sisters mentoring services to girls in the Boston area. Guinier is the author of Lift Every Voice: Turning a Civil Rights Setback into a New Vision of Social Justice. Guinier created Commonplace, a national nonprofit center to connect citizens, communities, and ideas; and Racetalks, a project to create opportunities for multiracial problem solving and collaboration.Submit items for the Newsmakers column to rhea_becker@harvard.edu .
