Dartmouth Falls: Women's soccer cuts Big Green down to size

The Harvard women's soccer team guaranteed that the Ivy title – a piece of it, at least – will reside in Cambridge this year with a 2-1 victory over the visiting Dartmouth Big Green on Saturday, Oct. 30.

Harvard came out of the gates flying, and had three good scoring opportunities squelched in the first 10 minutes. In the 31st minute, Beth Totman took a restart on the left side and punched it to a waiting fellow freshman Bryce Weed, who launched a shot on net. Dartmouth keeper Kristen Luckenbill made the initial grab, but the ball trickled through her hands and into the back of the net for the 1-0 Harvard advantage.

Midway through the second half, senior midfielder Ashley Berman had the ball on the right side and found Colleen Moore ’02 all alone in front of the net, and she slipped it past Luckenbill for the 2-0 advantage. With regulation time waning, Big Green midfielder Devon Haskell moved the ball up the middle, and pushed it to the left side and a waiting Jessica Post, who buried it in the side netting to the left of Harvard keeper, freshman Cheryl Gunther, with just over two minutes remaining in the game. Despite a mad rush at the end, the Big Green could not find the equalizing tally, and Harvard pushed its unbeaten streak to 12 games.

The goalkeepers had a busy afternoon, as each recorded 12 saves. Harvard closes out its regular season with a trip to Providence Saturday, Nov. 6, to take on Brown in an 11 a.m. start, while the Big Green will play at Columbia the same day at 2:30 p.m.
