President, Provost to hold office hours for students

President Neil L. Rudenstine and Provost Harvey Fineberg will hold office hours for students throughout the academic year. Rudenstine will hold a session on Friday, Oct. 1, from 4 to 5 p.m.; Fineberg will meet students on Friday, Oct. 8, from 4 to 5 p.m. at Massachusetts Hall. Meetings are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Student-faculty chess tournament seeking faculty participants

The Harvard Chess Club is planning a student-faculty tournament, and is seeking faculty participants who are chess masters or grand masters to compete against students of comparable rankings. Ivy League wins award for women's athletics project

Athletic Management magazine has named the Ivy League winner of the 1999 Atalanta Award for Women's Athletics in the category of Support Programs. The League was cited for its Silver Anniversary project. Winners of the Atalanta Awards will be profiled in the November issue of Athletic Management.

Volunteers required at the Semitic Museum

The Semitic Museum needs volunteers to act as docents, Monday through Friday, for its current exhibits: "The Sphinx and the Pyramids: 100 Years of American Archaeology at Giza," "Nuzi and the Hurrians: Fragments from a Forgotten Past," and "Ancient Cyprus: The Cesnola Collection." Some knowledge of ancient history would be helpful though the Museum will train volunteers. The time commitment is approximately two hours, once or twice a month. Course in reading strategies to be offered

Through readings, films, and classroom exercises, students learn to read more purposively, selectively, and with greater speed and comprehension. The class meets for three weeks, Monday through Friday, for one hour. The cost is $150. The fall sessions will be held Oct. 12-29, 8 to 9 a.m., and Oct. 25-Nov. 12, 4 to 5 p.m. To register, contact the Bureau of Study Counsel at (617) 495-2581.
