Philanthropist Kahn, A 'Son of Harvard,' Dies

Harry Kahn ’37, MPA ’48, a philanthropist and devoted son of Harvard, died Aug. 20. He was 82.

Kahn sustained his close connection and friships with the University since his undergraduate and graduate days in multiple ways. He served as chairman of the Advisory Board of the Malcolm Wiener Center for Social Policy, and on the Board of Overseers Committee to Visit the Kennedy School, the Kennedy School Alumni Steering Committee, the Kennedy School’s Campaign Leadership Committee, and the Committee on University Resources. He owed the Harry Kahn Lecturer and Fellowships in Social Policy at the Kennedy School. He also was an active supporter of the Harvard University Art Museums, to which he donated several works from his collection, and also helped fund the Philip and Lynn Straus Fund for the Center for Conservation and Technical Studies.

Kahn retired in 1988 after a 25-year career with the New York brokerage firm Neuberger & Berman, where he was a partner.

Kennedy School Dean Joseph Nye commented, "We have lost a dear fri and ardent supporter with Harry’s passing. He was a founding father of the School in many ways, leading and nurturing its growth and development over the 50 years of his involvement since his graduation. I am honored that the Harry Kahn Lecturer in Social Policy will keep his life and legacy alive here on campus."

In 1996, Harvard hosted an 80th birthday party, called "Harvard Honors Harry," at which 300 fris, family members, and associates of Harry’s joined him at the Harvard Club of New York to celebrate his lifetime of service, dedication, and commitment.

A memorial service will be held at the Harvard Club of New York on Wednesday, Oct. 27, from 6 to 8 p.m.
