HARVARD GAZETTE ARCHIVES
Web Connects Students, Alumni

A new Website came into existence over the summer that will create an online community comprising Harvard students and alumni who share an interest in technology. David Alpert 99, a computer science concentrator, worked through the spring and summer to create the new Website, with assistance from the Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Graduate student Michael Cuthbert helped with the graphics. According to Alpert, about 75 alumni have signed up so far, a considerable number considering that the Website has only been in operation for a few weeks. "Were trying to reach out to technology alumni," Alpert said. "Its a big group, and many of them have been very successful. The alumni themselves have requested this." The Website, known as "eHarvard Network," is sponsored by the Harvard Computer Society (HCS). It features discussion groups on which members can exchange information on technological subjects, a directory of alumni working in technology fields, and a newsletter called hcs%, available in both electronic and paper versions. Alpert said that while the Website is targeted at alumni, it is designed for students as well, and specifically intended to foster communication between the two groups. One benefit of this communication will be to offer assistance to students seeking to enter the job market. "The technology job market is very tight right now, so Im sure a lot of alumni will use the Website for recruiting, but this wont be its only purpose. I think the discussion areas will also be very popular. People enjoy being brought together through their connection with Harvard," Alpert said. eHarvard Networks homepage can be found at http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/~alumni.
