Obituaries
Gates, Former Professor of Pathology, Dies at 98 Olive Gates, a clinical professor of pathology at the Medical School and the first woman awarded a gold medal for distinguished service by the Massachusetts chapter of the American Cancer Society, died July 13 in Milford-Whitinsville Hospital. She was 98 and lived in Medway. Born in Worcester, Gates graduated from Vassar College in 1924 and Yale Medical School in 1929. Gates was a cancer pathologist at the Cancer Research Institute at the N.E. Deaconess Hospital, where she was credited with saving many lives by detecting malignant tumors during tissue examinations. Crane, Former Professor of Surgery, Dies at 88 Chilton Crane of Dover and Tuftonboro, N.H., a retired clinical professor of surgery at the Medical School, died of congestive heart failure Aug. 2 in Avery Manor in Needham. He was 88. Crane was born in Richmond, Mass. He studied at Yale University and M.I.T. before graduating from Harvard Medical School in 1938. From 1947 until his retirement in 1987, he was a member of the staffs of Brigham and Womens Hospital and the Veterans Administration Medical Center in West Roxbury, where he was chief of vascular surgery and chief of surgical service.Anne Francis Richardson, Former Overseer, Dies at 69 Anne Francis (Hazard) Richardson, former member of Harvard's Board of Overseers and wife of former U.S. Attorney General Elliot L. Richardson, died July 26 of complications arising from Alzheimers disease. Born in Providence, R.I., on Dec. 5, 1929, Anne Francis Hazard earned her bachelors degree in history from Radcliffe, where she met her husband, Elliot Richardson, at a dance. Mr. Richardson later became a Massachusetts politician who served in the Nixon and Ford cabinets and was ambassador to the United Kingdom. From 1981 to 1996 Mrs. Richardson served as chairman of Reading Is Fundamental, the nations largest literacy organization. She was elected to the Harvard Board of Overseers in 1993. A memorial service will be held in September.END |
