University Art Museums Offers Free Weekend Arts Program for Youth

The University Art Museums will offer its second season of free weekend arts programs for youth, called Voices of Youth in Arts and imaGEs (VOYAGE). Designed for children ages 10 to 13, VOYAGE combines guided discussions of art in the Fogg, Sackler, and Busch-Reisinger museums with hands-on activities, such as drawing, collage- making, and improvisational theater games.

Led by a corps of more than 20 volunteers (including Harvard undergraduate and graduate students), VOYAGE's goal is to offer youth a chance to have fun, be creative, and learn about art ‹ all in the context of first-rate museum collections. No art experience is required.

Three thematic multi-week programs are being offered:

Exploring Abstract Art

Saturdays: April 10, 17, and 24 from 2-4 p.m.: Is a line on a canvas a work of art? How about a purple blob? Put your pencils down, come join VOYAGE for a colorful time and express yourself through music, materials, and motion.

Sculpture and Theater

Saturdays-Sundays: April 10,11/17,18 from 2-4 p.m.: What if sculpture could come alive? Come look at sculpture, make sculpture, and become sculpture through interactive theater games and hands-on activities.

Drawing and Collage

Saturdays: May 1, 8, 15, and 22 from 2-4 p.m.: What do line, music, sticks, glue, chance, color, and shapes have in common? Come find out and have fun discovering how it all comes together through drawing and collage.

Registration began this week and is on a first-come, first-served basis. Enrollment is limited. The program is free of charge. To register, call the public education coordinator at the University Art Museums at (617) 496-8576.
