The Harvard men's swimming and diving team continued its
dominance over the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League
(EISL) last weekend by capturing its fourth straight EISL title
and its seventh in the last eight years. The Crimson, who finished the
regular season with a 9-0 record, never trailed in the competition,
finishing with 1,609.5 points, 409 ahead of second-place Princeton.
Harvard was led by senior All-American Greg Wriede who collected
first-place finishes in the 200 Individual Medley (IM) and 400
IM, as well as a second-place in the 200 backstroke. His winning time of
1:48.43 in the 200 IM was not only an NCAA B qualifying time, but it also
stands as the eighth fastest time swum by a collegiate swimmer in the
nation this year. In the Individual Medley, swimmers compete in a leg of
backstroke, butterfly, and breastroke, finishing wtih freestyle.

Despite not shaving for the competition, junior Tim Martin was the
team's other multiple winner as he dominated the distance events,
collecting first place in the 1000 freestyle (9:10.14) and 1650
freestyle (15:15.34). He also earned a second-place medal in the
500 freestyle, hitting the touch pad behind teammate Will Oren '01
who posted a NCAA B qualifying time of 4:25.05. Harvard pulled away
from the field thanks in part to its domination of the distance events. The
Crimson posted a one through five finish in the 500 freestyle and claimed
three of the top four finishers in the 1000 freestyle and had a 1-2-3 sweep
of the 1650 freestyle.
Oren was one of four finalists for the Crimson in the 400 IM. He was
second behind Wriede with a time of 3:54.42 and was followed by
teammates Donald Blanchard '02 and Michael Groves '01 who
finished in sixth and seventh place, respectively.
Freshman Matt Wrenshall was also a top point scorer for the
Crimson as he was victorious in the 200 freestyle, an event in which
Harvard had six swimmers finish in the top eight, with a time of
1:38.96. Wrenshall was also a third place finisher in the 200
breastroke as well as an integral part of Harvard's winning 200
and 400 medley relays.
