Harmonic Convergence

Photos by Kris Snibbe

The Phillips Brooks House Association program called HARMONY (Harvard and Radcliffe Musical Outreach to Neighborhood Youth) has been singing its song since 1992.

Through HARMONY, Harvard student volunteers play the challenging duet of being both "big sibling" and music teacher to a student in the Cambridge Public School system. Giving lessons in instruments ranging from piano to cello to voice, approximately 100 Harvard students share time and talent with kids who would otherwise be unable to pursue their musical interest. Beating the drum loudest for the program are the volunteers themselves who cite their developing friendships with their students as one of HARMONY's richest rewards. Pictured here are Annie Gladfelter, fourth-grader at Tobin Elementary School, and her personal maestro, sophomore English and sociology concentrator Erica LeBow. Says LeBow, "It's so much fun to work with Annie every week, to hear about her classes in school and what her friends are up to, while sharing my love of music with her."
