The Evangelist Billy Graham To Visit, Lead Service, Give Lecture
The evangelist The Rev. Billy Graham will visit Harvard for two
events to be held at the Memorial Church. On Feb. 7 at 11 a.m.,
Graham will preach at the Sunday worship service. His sermon is
entitled "The Real Meaning of the Cross." The service is
free and open to the public, and will be broadcast on WHRB (95.3
FM).
On Monday, Feb. 8, at 7:30 p.m., the Kennedy School's
Institute of Politics, Harvard Divinity School, and the Memorial
Church present "An Evening with Billy Graham." Graham
will discuss whether a belief in God is relevant to the 21st century.
Responding to his talk will be: Alan K. Simpson, former senator from
Wyoming and director of the Institute of Politics at the Kennedy
School of Government; the Rev. Peter J. Gomes, Plummer Professor of
Christian Morals and Pusey Minister in the Memorial Church; and
Harvey G. Cox, Victor S. Thomas Professor of Divinity at the Divinity
School. The event is free and open to the public, and can also be
viewed in Science Center C. "I am looking forward to returning
to the Harvard campus where I have always found a warm
welcome," said Graham. "I am looking forward to
discussing religion and philosophy for the 21st century."
Graham's last visit to Harvard was in 1982 when he
preached at the Memorial Church at the invitation of Gomes and
lectured at the Kennedy School of Government. "I invited the
Reverend Graham to preach in 1982 because he was an outstanding
spokesman for the Christian faith and I wanted to give him the
chance to be heard more widely, and especially at Harvard
University," said Gomes. Gomes said that in the past 17 years,
Graham's stature has risen, and he was thrilled that the
invitation to speak next month was accepted. "This is an
occasion of recognition and honor to one of the great figures of the
20th century."
