HMS Researchers Johnson and Goulder Honored for Pediatric AIDS Work
Two Harvard researchers will receive the 1999 Elizabeth Glaser
Pediatric AIDS Foundation Award today, Jan. 28, at the National
Press Club in Washington, D.C. First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton will
present the awards.
Paul Johnson, instructor in medicine at the Medical School, and
Philip Goulder, research fellow at the Medical School, will be among
this year's four recipients, who are being recognized for their
innovative, collaborative, and cutting-edge work on pediatric
HIV/AIDS.
The award recognizes outstanding individuals who embody
founder Glaser's dedication and compassion in working
tirelessly to improve the lives of children across the country and
around the world, and it provides funding for their ongoing research.
The Foundation was cofounded 10 years ago by three friends,
Glaser, Susan DeLaurentis, and Susie Zeegan, upon discovering that
Glaser and her children were infected with the disease and virtually
nothing was being done when it came to pediatric AIDS issues. The
three women drew international attention to pediatric HIV/AIDS and
created a future of hope for children and families. Today, the
Foundation is the leading national nonprofit dedicated to funding and
conducting research focused on pediatric HIV/AIDS so that children
are no longer forgotten. Elizabeth Glaser died in 1994.
