HARVARD GAZETTE ARCHIVES Ergonomics Programs Offered
The Department of Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) offers several training programs on computer workstation ergonomics and injury/illness prevention. The Classroom-Based Training Program is presented on a regular basis at both the Longwood and the Cambridge/Allston campuses. This one-hour training session provides an introduction to the principles of ergonomics, workstation design and safety, and comfortable work practices in the computerized office. Instructors demonstrate ways to prevent musculoskeletal strain or injury, increase productivity, and work more comfortably. This course enables participants to adjust their workstations and work practices for optimal comfort. To attend a session or to schedule a session at your workplace, please contact EH&S at 495-2060. For more information, visit the Website at http://www.uos.harvard.edu /ehs/. In addition, EH&S is launching an Online Computer Workstation Ergonomic Training and Evaluation Program. This program is accessible to Harvard faculty, staff, and students via the EH&S homepage. Its main purposes are to provide guidance to the Harvard community regarding sound ergonomic practices at the computer workstation and to alert users to the early warning signs and symptoms of ergonomic injury. The evaluation tool allows users to evaluate their own workstation and work habits relative to generally accepted criteria and make appropriate adjustments. A quiz at the conclusion of the program reinforces its main points. This program may be accessed from any University computer at the Website www.uos.harvard.edu/ehs/. These programs are intended for a broad audience as a prevention and information resource. EH&S staff are available to provide individual consultation, on-site evaluation, and training assistance.
