W.C. Moloney, Pioneer in Blood Diseases and Transfusion, Dies

William Curry Moloney, professor of medicine emeritus at Brigham and Women's Hospital, died on Nov. 3 at Brigham and Women's. He was 91.

Moloney was born in Boston and worked his way through college and medical school at Tufts University. He began working as a family doctor in Jamaica Plain, eventually concentrating on problems such as anemia and leukemia.

A highly recognized authority on safe blood transfusion procedures, his blood bank expertise led him to oversee transfusions to wounded soldiers in World War II. He was a pioneer in the use of chemotherapy for treating leukemia and lymphoma.

Moloney is survived by two sons, a daughter, 24 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.
