Miller Elected to Board of Institute of Civil
Justice
Arthur R. Miller, Bruce Bromley Professor of Law, has been elected
to the board of overseers of the Institute of Civil Justice (ICJ).
The ICJ is regarded as the premier institution conducting research
on the civil justice system. Key policy areas being studied include
alternative dispute resolution, reform of procedural and evidentiary
rules, legal implications of changes in health care, and product
liability.
Design School Names Winner of Urban Design Prize
The fifth Veronica Rudge Green Prize in Urban Design of the
Graduate School of Design (GSD) will be awarded to Sir Norman Foster,
English architect and urban designer, and his London-based firm, Foster
and Partners. Awarded biannually, the prize is the foremost award
recognizing achievement in this field. It was established in 1986.
Foster and Partners was chosen to receive the award for two
projects that bring together accessibility and elegance in urban life: the
subway system in Bilbao, Spain, and the development of the Carré
d'Art plaza in Nîmes, France. The GSD will present an exhibition of
work by Foster and Partners that will include the original competition
submissions as well as sketches, models, and construction photos. The
exhibition will run Dec. 2 to Jan. 15, 1999, at the Gund Hall Gallery.
Foster will be presented with the prize on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 6
p.m. in Piper Auditorium (Gund Hall). The ceremony will be open to the
public and will include a talk by Foster.
Guthke Delivers Address on Anniversary of C.F. Meyer's
Death
Karl S. Guthke, Kuno Francke Professor of German Art and Culture,
delivered a commemorative address on the 100th anniversary of the Swiss
writer Conrad Ferdinand Meyer's death. Guthke spoke at the Old Senate Hall
in Leipzig, Germany, on Oct. 29.
His topic was "The Art of Living and the Art of Dying: C.F. Meyer
and the Culture of Last Words." The event was sponsored by the German
Research Council and the Pro Helvetia Foundation.
Graduate Student Zellner Writes on Architecture
Peter Zellner, a Master of Architecture student at the Graduate
School of Design, has written a book, Pacific Edge: Contemporary
Architecture on the Pacific Rim. The aim of this all-encompassing
survey of the region's architecture is to demonstrate how 33 of the most
innovative architecture studios from around the Pacific Rim have created
buildings that draw on the cultural dynamism of the region.
